ONE HUNDRED REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL
There have been so many Reasons To Be Cheerful during the writing, rehearsing and performing of REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL but it’s always the unprovoked acts of generosity that mean so much – and Ian Dury’s friend, former art teacher and Graeae patron Sir Peter Blake has managed to stun the cast and crew into silence (and that’s saying something!) with a very special donation indeed.
When the Ian Dury and the Blockheads song ‘Reasons To Be Cheerful (Part 3)’ was originally released by Stiff Records in 1979 it was accompanied by a special poster – a lyric sheet of the song designed by Sir Peter Blake which featured key phrases in the song’s lyrics being replaced by a photo of that lyric – Buddy Holly, Piccadilly and a picture of the Eiffel Tower (for “Paris”) were some of the images that were included on this rare poster which, soon after the release of the single, disappeared into the mists of popular music folklore.
Fast-forward 31 years to 2010 and with rehearsals for REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL in full swing Sir Peter Blake joined the list of the show’s famous supporters by signing his 3 Reasons To Be Cheerful on a white pair of Dr. Martens and donating the signed pair of boots to be displayed at the show. About a week later we received a message that Sir Peter was sending over something else to Graeae. This next delivery turned out to be 100, full-colour re-prints of the original Peter Blake designed Stiff Records promotional poster for ‘Reasons To Be Cheerful (Part 3)’ individually numbered and personally signed by Sir Peter Blake, accompanied by the hope that they might be of some use to Graeae.
